About Trucks like in Movies

In Europe they are mostly known from Hollywood-movies but I finally saw one in real life in Deloraine in Tasmania - a big truck looking like Optimus Prime from Transformers.

About wisdom you can find on the street

In Melbourne you get reminded by the public transport company to pay attention to the street, in Sydney you find streetart that reminds you to take care of your friends when they need you the most. This one is in a part of Sydney called New Town, which is famous for its graffities and speciality in general.

About the sound of Sydneys streets and the Opera House

Being asked to take pictures of the buildings of Sydney, the Opera house was obviously the first thing I had to come up with.

On my way to the harbour I walked pass this street artist, who calls herself 'Monnew a busker'. I listened to some of her songs and I can only encourage you to do so too on her Facebook-page. I can hardly support talented street artists with coins but as her sign asks to like her on Facebook I hope I can at lesast help her getting better known futuring her here on my blog. How would you support a street artist rather than with a few coins? Leave me a comment with your ideas!

How 2014 arised from a firework like a phoenix

The first things that came into my mind when I thought about Sydney before coming here were the Opera House and the big firework display on new years eve.
So when I came to Australia I had no real plans what I wanna do in particular beside one thing: I wanted to be in Sydney at New Years Eve to see the big firework display.
I actually thought about cancelling that point when I was in Tasmania as I made some really good friends who were having a big New Years Eve party and I was thinking about if it may not be more importent to celebrate with friends and having a good party rather than seeing a big firework display. What do you think, what's more importent for you?

But in the end I made my decision to leave Tassy, because I got the feeling that I somehow got stuck on that little island and well, how often would I be in Sydney on New Years Eve, right?
Julia and me

Well, when I finally arrived in Sydney I started worrying a little bit. I think I underestimated how big the firework gonna be. This is one of the biggest events in the whole year for Sydney. Millions of people gather along the harbor to have a good view and billions watch it online. Everyone recommends to start picknicking in the morning to have a good spot because of the huge amount of people.

Well, I was too lazy to do that, honestly. I prefered to chill out the day and watch some episodes of Red Dwarf with my housemates - a low budget BBC-Scifi-production from the 90s worth a look!
Then out of a sudden I got a call from an austrian girl, Julia, who invited me to a houseparty in her school, where they had a magnificant view of the Sydney bridge and harbor. And that's exactly why I don't worry anymore about plans. In the end it simply allways works out. I don't like that saying, but it turned out to be true: Just go with the flow! ;)

Most of the people at the party were so called Gappies (don't try to google that, this word seems not to be written down yet). Young people who worked for a gapyear in the school on which roof we were celebrating.

On my way home (or rather to the next party) I realised how badly organised the public transport system in Sydney is. Even though the authorities know how many people are on the street to watch the firework display all around the city they don't have enough buses to transport them all. Actually, the buses did not stop at the stops that night but 50m or so later to let people out but prevent people from entering the bus. So I had to run after the bus though I was waiting at the bus stop but was therefore lucky enough to jump in without paying for a ticket! :)
Others just fell asleep next to the bus stop, too tired of waiting for the buses that wouldn't stop for them.

More pictures of how Sydney let 2014 arise out of a firework like a phoenix can you find in this album on my G+page.

What are your New Year resolutions? Leave me a comment, I'm curious how fast you fail :p

Welcome to 2014! :)

About coming back to work

Sarah, actor and totally into the 20s and 30s.
Back in Austria I worked as a party-photographer. It's an amazing job and I'm really glad that I got it as it is everything but easy to make money as a photographer. Especially if you don't have a portfolio and no one knows you (as a photographer).

Even though I loved my job it had some backdraws. My working hours were at the same time when my friends went out partying. Sometimes I even met someone I knew, some people I even haven't seen in years! But I couldn't stay too long chatting with them since I had to work.

As a result of this I prefered to leave my camera at home in this spare nights when I actually went out partying and just enjoyed it not to walk around quickly, annoying people with asking them for a photo...or getting anoyed by people who want more and more photos of themselves. Or the worst: people who tell me that I took a bad picture of them when I just thought "Man, I can't change your f*** face....!"
Shane, an independent director.
Doesn't he look like Walter White from Breaking Bad?

So when I came to Sydney I got in touch with a group of people who are totally into cinematography, acting and movies. Most of them attending an event called KINO, where short movies from independent and hobby directors are shown once in a month. The next one will be at the 6th of January (Click here for the Facebook-Event) and I'm really looking forward to it as I've only heard good things about it so far!

Getting involved in this network I got an invitation to the premieres of two movies called 'Bucks party' and 'Hens night' which are crossover movies about a couples last night in freedom and what happend to them. It's a little bit like Hangover but less...well...let's say there are better films out there - which might be because the movies are actually still in Postproduction but renting a cinema was cheaper this time of the year so they showed the movie earlier than they should have...

To come back to why I talked about my work as a party-photographer; there was an aftershowparty and I somehow ended up with my camera there - on the one hand assisting the official photographer of the event with the lighting, holding a slave-flash in the right (and sometimes in the wrong) angle but also taking pictures with my own camera without flash (because mine stopped working back the other day for some reason).
Susanne, actor

In the beginning of the party I wasn't quite certain if it was a good idea to bring my camera with me but in the end I really enjoyed it as it was less stressful because it was only for fun and not as a job. All of the pictures in this post were taken at the party.

I'm now gonna stay a little bit longer in Sydney than expected and I already got in touch with two bands to take pictures at their concert. If you wanna have a look at my previous concert pictures, check out my G+ Profile (Click) which I'm gonna use as main platform to publish pictures and build up my portfolio.
Or you can even follow me on G+ or 'circle' me ;-p

Is there anything you would like me to write about or take pictures of in Sydney? Just leave me a comment ;)

Have a happy new year!

About the omnipresence of royalty

Wherever you go in Melbourne, you'll be reminded that Australia is a part of the British Commonwealth. Wherever you walk, you have to admire the city councils unbelievable creativity in making up names...Royal botanic garden, Royal Melbourne Hospital, Royal Arcade, Royal Exhibition Building...there are probably more royal buildings than in whole England. :D

Anyway this picture was taken in one of the botanical gardens in the city near Mozart Street in St. Kilda.

About the stars

One of the probably most gorgeous thing to see in the world is a sky full of stars and when you look up to the sky in a clear night in Australia you can even see the milky way. This was one of my first shots of the stars, taken when we where camping at the Bays of Fire.
